Add photos and files
Updated Oct 16, 2026 · Applies to Web, iPhone, and Android · All plans
You can attach photos and text documents to a message, such as a photo of a vial label or a lab report, and ask about them. Photos can be PNG, JPEG, or WebP up to 10 MB, and documents can be plain text, Markdown, or JSON up to 2 MB. How many you can attach depends on your plan.
Attach a file
On the web
- Select the + button at the left of the message box.
- On a computer, select Add photos & files and choose one or more files. In a phone's browser, choose Camera, Photos, or Files.
- Wait for each file to finish uploading. Its progress shows on the file.
- Type your question and send it.
You can also drag files onto the message box, or paste an image, such as a screenshot. You need to be signed in to attach files.
On iPhone and on Android
- Tap the + button at the bottom left of the message box.
- Choose Camera, Photos, or Files. Files opens text, Markdown, and JSON documents.
- To add another file, tap + again.
- Type your question and tap Send.
To remove a file before you send, select the × on it on the web, or tap it on iPhone and on Android.
What you can attach
| Kind | Formats | Largest size |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | PNG, JPEG, WebP | 10 MB |
| Documents | Plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md), JSON (.json) | 2 MB |
Other formats are not accepted, including PDF, Word documents, spreadsheets, and HEIC photos. To ask about a PDF, attach a screenshot of the page, or paste its text into your message.
ChatPEP reads only the first part of a very long document. If the part you care about is further in, paste that section into your message instead.
How many files you can attach
| Plan | Files per message | Files per day |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 2 | 5 |
| Basic | 3 | 25 |
| Research | 3 | 50 |
| Frontier | 5 | 100 |
- The daily count covers the past 24 hours, not the calendar day, and it is shared across the web, iPhone, and Android.
- A file counts as soon as it starts uploading, even if you remove it before sending.
- A file that is turned away does not count.
If a file is not accepted
The file stays in the message box with a short message saying why:
- This file type isn't supported. The file is not one of the formats above.
- A size message, such as "That file is too large." The file is over the limit for its kind.
- A message about files per message, on the web. You have added as many files as your plan allows on one message. Send it, then attach the rest to the next one.
- You've reached today's upload limit. You have added your plan's daily number of files. Room frees up as files added in the past 24 hours age out.
- Upload failed. The upload did not finish. Remove the file and add it again.
What ChatPEP does with your file
ChatPEP reads the photo, or the document's text, to answer your message, and can refer back to it later in the same chat. The file shows above your message. On the web, select it to open it.
A photo of a vial, a label, a pen, or a product listing is read as a setup check: ChatPEP reads the compound, the amount in mg, and the volume or concentration it states, and compares them with what you told it or worked out in the dose calculator. It says what the label states and what a label cannot prove.
ChatPEP can explain what a value on a lab report measures and what the research says about it. It cannot diagnose you. Talk to your doctor about your results.
Files are stored privately and are deleted when you delete the chat, or 365 days after you delete your account. See What happens to files you upload.
