What happens to files you upload
Updated Oct 7, 2026 · Applies to Web, iPhone, and Android · All plans
Photos and documents you attach to a message are stored privately, used to answer that message, and deleted when you delete the chat, or 365 days after you delete your account.
What happens when you attach a file
- The file is stored privately in ChatPEP's cloud storage. It is never public.
- When you send the message, the file is read so the answer can use it. A photo is sent to the AI model provider that writes the answer, and a document's text is included with your message.
- The file stays attached to that message, so you can see it when you come back to the chat. ChatPEP reviews it along with the chat to improve the product and keep it safe. See Who can see your chats.
When files are deleted
- You remove a file before sending: it is deleted within a day.
- You delete the chat: its files are deleted within a day.
- The chat was temporary: its files are deleted with it, 30 days after your last message.
- You delete your account: all of your files are kept for 365 days to meet legal and financial obligations, then deleted.
Limits
Photos can be PNG, JPEG, or WebP, up to 10 MB each. Documents can be plain text, Markdown, or JSON, up to 2 MB each. How many you can attach depends on your plan. See Add photos and files.
