Chat history and your plan
Updated Oct 16, 2026 · Applies to Web, iPhone, and Android · All plans
Chat history is part of Basic, Research, and Frontier: every chat stays in your sidebar and in search. On Free, you can open only your most recent chat. Earlier chats are kept, and they appear once you upgrade.
On Basic and up
Every chat you have not archived or deleted is in your sidebar, and Search chats finds any of them by title. You can pin, rename, archive, and delete chats from their menus. See Find, rename, and pin chats.
On Free
- Your most recent chat stays open to you. You can keep going in it, including after you reload the page.
- A new chat takes its place. Once you send a message in a new chat, that one becomes your most recent, and the earlier one is locked.
- Earlier chats show as faded titles in the sidebar, with a lock line underneath. On the web, select the lock line to see the plans.
- Search is not available. Search chats appears once you upgrade.
- Opening an earlier chat's link takes you to a new chat on the web. On iPhone and on Android, it shows a message that chat history is part of Basic and up.
Everything else works the same: temporary chats, sharing the chat you are in, and archiving or deleting from Data controls.
Nothing is deleted
Your chats are kept whatever your plan. When you upgrade, earlier chats appear in your sidebar. If a paid plan ends, your chats stay in your account, and earlier ones are locked again until you upgrade.
Upgrade
Open Settings, then Plan on the web or Subscription on iPhone and on Android. Plans lists every plan above yours. On the web, the pricing page sells them too. See Compare plans for what each plan includes.
