Liraglutide studies weigh heart rhythm, bone, and antipsychotic weight
Three new reports look at liraglutide from different angles. They find fewer irregular heartbeats in one group, weight loss in people taking antipsychotics, and thin evidence on bone.

Three new reports add detail to what liraglutide research shows 1. The largest study followed people with obesity and advanced kidney disease. It found fewer new cases of an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation in people who used a GLP-1 drug, a class that includes liraglutide and exenatide 2. A meta-analysis found meaningful weight loss in adults taking antipsychotic medicines 1. A bone review found the evidence still too thin to draw firm conclusions 3.
What the three new studies did
The table below compares the three reports.
| Study population | What was compared | Follow-up | Primary outcome | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7,326 matched adults with obesity and stage 3 to 5 kidney disease, no diabetes | GLP-1 drugs: semaglutide, liraglutide, or tirzepatide versus no GLP-1 drug 2 | 1 year | New atrial fibrillation | 1.63% vs 2.62%, hazard ratio 0.655 |
| 535 adults taking antipsychotics, 8 trials | GLP-1 receptor agonist versus comparison group 1 | Trial length not reported | Body weight | 6.54 kg lower on average |
| 493 adults with overweight or obesity, 8 trials | GLP-1 medicine versus placebo or another diabetes drug 3 | At least 12 weeks | Bone mineral density by DXA | No pooled estimate, evidence insufficient |

What the heart rhythm study found
Among adults with obesity and chronic kidney disease, GLP-1 drug use was linked to fewer new atrial fibrillation cases. Chronic kidney disease means the kidneys filter blood less well. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat 2.
Researchers used a large US health-records network and matched two groups. One group used semaglutide, liraglutide, or tirzepatide. The other group did not use these medicines. People were not randomly assigned, but matching made the groups similar on many background factors 2.
At one year, 1.63 percent of the GLP-1 group had a new atrial fibrillation diagnosis, compared with 2.62 percent of the comparison group. The hazard ratio was 0.655, which means the GLP-1 group had about 35 percent lower chance during that year 2.
The same pattern appeared for paroxysmal, persistent, and longstanding persistent atrial fibrillation. The result for permanent atrial fibrillation was not significant at one year. The study also found fewer ventricular tachyarrhythmias, fast and potentially dangerous heart rhythms, and fewer hospital admissions. The pattern held at two and three years 2.
Because people were not randomly assigned, this is a link rather than proof that the drugs caused the difference 2.
What the antipsychotic-weight review found
In adults taking antipsychotic medicines, adding a GLP-1 drug was associated with weight loss and smaller waist measurements. Antipsychotics are used for serious mental illness and often cause weight gain 1.
This was a meta-analysis of eight randomized controlled trials with 535 participants. In these trials, people treated with a GLP-1 receptor agonist had an average body weight 6.54 kg lower than comparison. Body mass index was 2.34 points lower, waist circumference 5.22 cm lower, and visceral fat mass 0.31 kg lower 1.
Blood sugar control improved too. HbA1c, a measure of average blood sugar over several months, was 0.32 percentage points lower. LDL cholesterol was 0.16 mmol/L lower. Total cholesterol and triglycerides did not change significantly 1.
The review pooled GLP-1 drugs as a class, so it does not separate liraglutide from the other medicines 1.
What the bone review found
A systematic review of bone scans gives no clear answer yet. The review identified eight randomized controlled trials with 493 adults who had overweight or obesity. The trials covered four different GLP-1 medicines that differ greatly in how much weight they help people lose 3.
Because the medicines are so different, the authors did not pool the results. They reported each medicine separately. They concluded that the evidence is insufficient to establish what GLP-1 therapy does to bone mineral density in this population 3.
Bone mineral density is a measure of bone strength on a DXA scan. The question matters because liraglutide is already known to reduce lean mass along with fat, which could affect bones, but the randomized evidence here is sparse 3.
How this fits earlier liraglutide research
Earlier randomized evidence supports liraglutide for weight loss. A systematic review of approved weight-loss drugs found average losses of about 8.8 to 11 percent of body weight with the 3 mg daily dose 5. The new antipsychotic meta-analysis found a smaller average loss of 6.54 kg, but it pooled different GLP-1 drugs in a different population 1.
On heart outcomes, the randomized LEADER trial in type 2 diabetes found fewer major cardiovascular events and deaths with liraglutide 6. A transportability analysis suggested similar effects could extend to a broader real-world population 6. The new heart-rhythm study is observational, not randomized, but it points in the same general direction for adults with obesity and advanced kidney disease who do not have diabetes 2.
Earlier safety reviews have reported rare risks for pancreatitis and thyroid cancer, but these new reports do not change those findings 7.
Other GLP-1 medicines, such as dulaglutide and exenatide, share the same receptor pathway, but the new reports do not compare liraglutide directly against them 1.
What we still do not know
No new study separates liraglutide from the wider GLP-1 class for the antipsychotic-weight or heart-rhythm findings 1. The bone evidence is too thin to say whether liraglutide strengthens, weakens, or leaves bone unchanged 3.
The observational heart-rhythm result cannot rule out differences between people who use these medicines and people who do not 2. Randomized trials would be needed to establish cause and effect.
The studies do not tell us how these findings apply to younger adults, to people with normal kidney function, or to people at lower starting weight 2.

Three new liraglutide reports looked at early weight loss as a predictor, adolescent safety at lower doses, and gut changes in mice. The clearest adult finding is that one-month weight loss tracked six-month response.
